Kawayan Festival (officially known as Abrenio Kawayan Festival) is Abra's greatest festival coinciding with the foundation day of the province.

It showcases the arts, craft and diverse culture of the province. It primarily highlights the kawayan (bamboo) which grows abundantly in the province. Kawayan is then used by the Abrenios as a raw material in creating indigenous crafts and local products.

But what I am going to highlight today is not about this kawayan, sorry for that. Because Kawayan Festival is not at all about the kawayan, there are also other activities that are worth watching for. As for me, I was able to watch the TERNO FASHION SHOW. It is not your ordinary fashion show because this event features Terno gowns with a twist. This twist is about mixing the Tinguian elements in some of the dresses making it authentically Abra-inspired, not to mention that the fabric used are Abra-made So let's take a look what happened that day by viewing some of my [trashy] photos.

This Abra-inspired fashion show was held at the Abra Provincial Grandstand Gymnasium in Bangued town. The models were the beautiful women of Abra themselves coming from different age groups (from teens to senior citizens) who came to represent their own town. These women all walked down the stage to showcase the beauty of their culture, arts and crafts.

Most of the fabrics used were locally made from Bulbulala, a loom-weaving village in La Paz town of the same province. The village is among the last villages in Ilocos-Abra area that have local weavers of Abel, an Ilocano woven fabric.

The presence of Abel-weavers in Abra also shows the strong presence of the Ilocano culture. The Ilocanos share a space with the Tinguian tribesmen in the province.

The event was opened with lovely Ilocano love songs sung by an Abrenio choir.

Don't think I am now shifting from travel blogging to fashion blogging, LOLS! I blogged this because I believe this event is an inherent part of the Abrenian culture and the Kawayan Festival. Indeed a must-see event in Abra. /end

"The roasted cow served as a sign for unity, it was only one yet it can feed many which can simply be related to the goal of P.E.A.C.E. for Abra group to unite the people in one with peace and harmony."

The people of Abra from all over the world can never forget where they came from. It is a part of their outcries to change their province for good so the group Peace for Abra was formed. I got interested with the Roasted Cow that has made the people of Abra worldwide to spread peace this day!

Wholly cow, ready to get roasted transported from this jeep
P.E.A.C.E. for Abra is an international group of Abrenians with the goal to promote peace for the province of Abra and to help their less fortunate kababayans.

The group is supposed to roast a lamb but since it was not available, this cow became the subject.

What made this scene interesting on my part is that it was a huge thing compared to the usual swine which is very popular as litson baboy. It was very noteworthy that this big roasted cow gathered all the Abrenians worldwide for a mission, for peace, and for unity.

Litson Baka
Abrenians who are more fortunate in their lives, around 100 of them came here to bring charitable works for their less fortunate brothers.

The event was held last March 08, 2012 at Bobila Farm, Cosili, Bangued and the roasted cow just looks epic as it made the people unite in one accord. The roasted cow served as a sign for unity, it was only one yet it can feed many which can simply be related to the goal of P.E.A.C.E. for Abra group to unite the people in one with peace and harmony.

One member said, "It was a wonderful celebration of helping our less fortunate brothers and sisters in Abra, which is the main reason why P4A exists!" -- This is a public service post made possible via Saks Baroña. /end

"This form of transport system has been in Vigan since the Spanish colonial era and until now, it remained present to the streets of Vigan for centuries -- and today, they own this festival."

Vigan, being a home for rich culture and intact heritage in the Philippines, it is not doubtful why many have fallen in love with this world heritage city and just this week, the Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts 2012 has just began. The first main event for this festival is the Calesa Parade [2012 version].

Vigan Calesa Parade
Calesa/s became the stars of the day. All were decorated with beautiful designs mainly depicting the rich culture and heritage of Vigan.

The calesa/s were just stunning as they take the parade route. The sun was very present this day and it can not be denied that it was hot. But I can see the enjoyment of the people watching those lovely calesa/s on a parade.

The old and the young, I can see the smile to their faces as they see those calesa/s dressed in a way that they are not used of seeing.

The city became vibrant, full of people, both the locals and tourists, travelers and visitors. Vigan turned colorful instantly and the people of Vigan has just showcased their creativity and skill on arts.

Viva Vigan Festival
Calesa is a common form of transportation in Vigan but usually, they cater for tourists who want to roam around Vigan.

This form of transport system has been in Vigan since the Spanish colonial era and until now, it remained present to the streets of Vigan for centuries -- and today, they own this festival.

Calesa with the image of Calle Crisologo has been synonymous to Vigan. Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts gave way for these horse-drawn carriages to shine even brighter even just for a day.

"...this is just an art and there's nothing harmful about those, they just  look scary."

The old heritage city is just "I think" a perfect place for thrill seekers this Halloween season given the idea that the old ancestral houses are once a home for ancestors who are now dead. Although it is true, this is not a ground to be fearful in Vigan because the city is just making fun of the ghosts and engkanto that roams the city freely this Halloween. The city has just formulated the RANIAG Twilight Festival for everyone to enjoy the Halloween as a form of merry-making and fun in Vigan City.

Now let's check out some of the horror characters who have invaded the heritage city of Vigan. This is still a part of the Raniag Twilight Festival 2011.

Mangkukulam/Mambabarang

In Ilocano they are called Manggagamod and they have found a space on Vigan's streets. Mangkukulam is popular in urban legends with the mythical belief that they can incur illnesses to the victim using a goo-goo doll. Usually physicians can not diagnose the illness. According to legends, they do this because of envy.

This witch (mangkukulam) carries with her the silyasi as a tool for her kulam activities.

Smoke keeps coming out from the silyasi
Picture taking with the followers of the mangkukulam
Tried myself to have immersed with these engkantos that freely roam around the city center.

Well, there's nothing to fear because they are just a mere simulation of the urban legends.

In fact, I was enjoying the costume party although I don't encourage everyone to wear a costume not friendly to kids. Parental guidance is always advised.

Unknown Maligno

This next creature as I called it "unknown maligno" is of course unknown to me, lol. It is my first time to see this kind of creature and I just salute the creativity of its creators.

Frightening creatures of the underworld keep appearing. There are creatures that I have never seen before and the photo above has a long tongue that keeps lying off the throat.

The reddish color was so creative as it tried to blend with the blackish motif that creates goosebumps.

Aswang

Aswang is also very popular on the Pinoy urban legends being able to separate it's lower and upper body and leave the other on the ground and the upper half can fly up the sky and look for a victim. Legends tell that aswang's favorite victims are the the pregnant women. They love to eat human internal organs as well as of the animals around. They become a normal person before the sun shines.
